And I can't help but trace its etiology, at least in part, to the promiscuous pointing and clicking that has come to stand in for intellectual inquiry. When I try to help them corral their impressions into coherent stories, I keep hearing the same complaint: "I can't concentrate." I've diagnosed this phenomenon as epidemic attention deficit disorder. Their writing often "clicks" from info-bit to info-bit, their arguments free of that gluey, old-fashioned encumbrance - the transitional sentence. Scant on world knowledge and critical thinking skills, they are ill-equipped to interpret or judge the so-called facts, which they insert into their papers confidently but in no discernible order. Not to be confused with John Auld (disambiguation), Old Jock, or Old John. ![]() Ī year later, the English philanthropist Lady Burdett-Coutts was charmed by the story and had a drinking fountain topped with Bobby's statue (commissioned from the sculptor William Brodie) erected at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row (opposite the entrance to the churchyard) to commemorate him. He was buried just inside the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard, not far from John Gray's grave. He died in 1872 and a necropsy by Prof Thomas Walley of the Edinburgh Veterinary College concluded he had died from cancer of the jaw. īobby is said to have sat by the grave for 14 years. ![]() In 1867 the lord provost of Edinburgh, Sir William Chambers, who was also a director of the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, paid for Bobby's licence and gave the dog a collar, now in the Museum of Edinburgh. Bobby then became known locally, spending the rest of his life sitting on his master's grave. When John Gray died he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, the kirkyard surrounding Greyfriars Kirk in the Old Town of Edinburgh. The innocent mage by karen miller6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() The only criticism I have is that she seems to be dancing around a religious allegory and that was a bit distracting. Miller gave me that and I will continue to read her novels. I was looking for long fantasy novels where I could get involved with the characters and not have my attention wander. The narrator of these books handled the dialect very well but does not return to read the series that comes after, and that may be a difficult switch. ![]() These rules are meant to be broken, but it takes a good fantasy writer to do it. ![]() She writes in dialect, and she calls real things by made up names. Miller breaks a couple 'rules' of writing and does it very well. Looking at the other books available, I can see that the history behind the Innocent Mage is out there as well. This is Fantasy with characters I could understand, a lot of raw emotion, and a rich background story only hinted at. I enjoyed both books in this series very much. This was my first experience with Karen Miller's work. ![]()

The China Garden by Liz Berry6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Liz Berry worked in the arts and with high school students, and her characters are on this cusp of adulthood, dealing with serious issues (pregnancy, homelessness, physical attraction, love and sex) and they are often artists (painters, designers, musicians). I also found Mel, and liked that too – that one had a girl renovating a house all by herself, and I had just moved into the first place I ever *owned* so I was interested in that home-beautifying process. The author was really good at creating an emotional atmosphere and a tone of inevitability. I'm partial to books set in England because growing up in a British colony, many kids books I read were set there. ![]() The only book I could find in the US was The China Garden – which was this young adult romance/mystery with paranormal aspects combined with a very British voice. I was very struck by it. ![]() I think it may have been maybe 5 years ago. ![]() I'm not sure when I first read a recommendation for Liz Berry's books. ![]()
